The Department of the Navy (DoN) Historically Black Colleges and Universities/Minority Institutions (HBCU/MI) – Cyber and Data Science Program was launched in response to the President’s National Security Strategy (February 2015) to secure our nation’s cyberspace while providing opportunity, diversity, inclusion, and real world exposure.
Students majoring in computer science, computer engineering, cyber, data science or information technology attending the nation’s HBCU/MIs compete for the opportunity to participate in a 6 – 7 month dual program where they work in teams, directly with NAVWAR Enterprise technical professionals, on mission-critical cyber and data science-related initiatives.
The Cyber and Data Science Program has two phases:
Phase 1 (February – April): While attending their respective HBCU/MI, student participants join in monthly mentoring cyber workshops led by NAVWAR personnel via virtual tele-communication (VTC).
Phase 2 (May – August): Student participants transition to paid interns and spend 10 weeks supporting DoN’s NAVWAR laboratories located in Philadelphia, PA; San Diego, CA; Charleston, SC; Pearl City, HI; New Orleans, LA. or Hampton Roads, VA. Interns will be immersed in cyber and data science focused projects on protecting and defending the nation’s information systems networks and outmaneuvering cyber adversaries.
Award Duration and Stipend
Selected undergraduates will receive $8,500 in total for work completed.
Selected graduate school students will receive $10,500 in total for work completed.
Stipends will be paid in bi-weekly payments during the ten (10) weeks of phase II (Internship) of the program.
